BMX Bikes
BMX bikes and parts come from a wide variety of suppliers and materials.
One of the more intriguing is the wooden frame BMX bike produced by Swiss manufacturer Chrigus.
Wood of course is a growing material, and has very good mechanical properties. With the production of this environmentally friendly raw material, it also helps to contribute to a clean environment.
Chrigus wood bikes are made from local wood species. The frame is made of thin layers of wood that are glued together in a mold under high pressure. The stability is much higher than for unprocessed wood.
High quality processed wood can withstand the vibrations resulting in the rigors of BMX riding without losing stability.
At the heart of the Chrigus BMX bike is the frame, which is made of ash or beech wood. The texture of pressed wood for each Chrigus bike makes it a very unique bike indeed.
The Chirgus Model N is an 8 speed rider made with an ash frame made of molded plywood. The rear derailleur is a Shimano nexus hub gear. It has the option of a Schlumpf transmission crank or a 14 speed Rohloff hub gear transmission. The front brakes are Shimano V-brakes, while the rear brakes are Shimano roller brakes. Optional is the Shimano hydraulic brake disc. The bike’s fork is a Rock Shox suspension fork with optional speed lifter. Wheels are provided by Shimano or DT Swiss with Schwalbe tires.
The Chirgus Model W is made from part ash and beech molded plywood. The rear derailleur is a Shimano Deore 27 course, which can be upgraded to the Shimano Deore XT. It comes with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and a Rock Shox suspension fork. Options for wheels include either Shimano or DT Swiss housing Schwalbe tires.
Keep in mind that wooden frame BMX bicycles take more time to manufacture, and therefore are sold at a premium price.
